The following are a selection of emails I’ve received in just one year (2009) from some of the schools using Assertive Mentoring to help them improve and raise standards –
“Eamonn…..Our results 37% 5 A*-C inc Eng and Maths this year and 55% overall. Last was 16 and 38%. A version of the Hurworth scheme was used!! Thanks a lot!! I thought you would like to know.” Paul M, Kingsthorpe College (Northampton)
“Hi Eamonn. Just thought you’d like to know – results at Prestwich -5 A* - C increased by 10% this year to 65% and with English and Maths was also up 8%. I’m sure that your results were excellent. We’ve already started to mentor the next Year 11. I wanted to thank you for all your help and support – the Head sends his regards; he is very impressed with the outcomes. I hope you are well. Take care….” Barbara Bryant (Deputy Head of a School in Bury)
“Eamonn, Yorkshire Martyrs (a school I supported to put in Assertive Mentoring) increased from 24% to 37% 5 A-C inc. En/Ma and attributed much of this success to the Assertive mentoring. They were very pleased with how things had gone.” Janet Gabanski, Principal Link Officer (11-19)Heath Training and Development Centre, Halifax
“Hi Eamonn, Our results this year were great - our best ever! We achieved 61%A*-C inc Eng and Maths - this is up 7% on last year and 16% in 2 years. We achieved 95% A*-C!! We were second best for this figure in the Liverpool authority second only to Bluecoat school which admits the top 120 pupils in the city via examination. Of the 11 pupils who did not achieve 5, 6 were educated elsewhere, 3 achieved 4 passes, 1 achieved 4.5 passes and 1 was a statemented pupil. Thanks for all your support in setting this up at Broughton.” Debbie Lodge, Broughton Hall School Liverpool
“Hi Eamonn, We have had a brilliant summer. Our work on National Challenge was classed as good with outstanding features by the DCSF. A week later ofsted came for a monitoring visit, changed it to a section 5 and took us out of Special Measures with a judgement of Good in every category! This was then matched by our results in Aug - 53% A*-C (39% last year) and 39% inc E/M (17% last year). Both reaching FFTD targets.” Christine Hill Deincourt School, Derbyshire
“Our results made a good leap forward. Up14% to 55% 5 A*-C and up 8% to 32% for 5A*- C including English and maths! So we crossed the magic 30% threshold, earning us a visit from Schools Minister Vernon Coaker last Friday. We are all thrilled with the progress and are full steam ahead to do the same this year. We piloted Assertive mentoring with just our National Challenge Cohort last year, but we're rolling it out to all Y11 this year.” Allison Redshaw
